The Hobbit Holes were always a great series of models to make. We set a slightly cute style with them which gave them a great deal of character.
We also had to limit the budget to keep these more affordable and so we tried to make the entire sculpt mouldable in one piece. The sculpting really helped here as it can fill in a lot of gaps.
All the model making was done in styrene strip and textured to look like old timber.
My task was the model making and usually took around a week to do. I had to figure out the scale and how to fit it onto the small bases.
The brick work was the slowest part as each brick was individually done with a small space between. Bricks were usually 1mm x 2mm and there were upwards of 100 on each.
Once the model making was done, I would often start blocking in the sculpt and my co-worker Leonard, would complete the sculpt. If there was more time he would add more detail.
We had to be sure that everything was filled in from behind so it could come out of the mould in one piece.
